Mexico, here I come!

Ready or not, it’s almost time to leave!

Mexico Weather Forecast

Even though I’ll be away until March 11, there will still be some action on my blog. I got a few posts ready so that you can enjoy some Top 10 Quirks and Penpal Ads while I’m reading or writing letters on the beach! I might even be able to post some live updates since I’ll have access to the Internet during my vacation…

I’ll talk to you again soon!

Penpal of the Week #65

Today a girl from Italy is the Penpal of the Week – let’s meet her!

Please tell us about you!

Hello! My name is Francesca and I’m 23 years old; I live in a small village near the beautiful city of Verona (Italy). I think it is quite famous thanks to the story (or, better, tragedy!) of Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare. So it’s the perfect city for me that I am a very romantic and sweet person! Right now, I’m studying Contemporary History at Uni and I really like it!

Francesca 1

Here I am :D

I have one brother who is my rock, even if he’s younger than me – I’m very close to him and I guess I’ll be very jealous when he finds a girlfriend :D I’m very close to my parents too: I have to say that my family is the most important part of my life and I can’t imagine to live without them.

My whole family and me when I got my bachelor degree, on March 2011.

Sadly, I don’t have any pet, even if I love cats and I hope to be able to keep one of them one day!

I’m a quiet girl and my main interests are reading (I have tons of books in my house!), visiting museums and exhibitions (I love art, I think it’s one of the most beautiful expression of the human being), writing (poems and short stories… and letters, of course!) and singing (when I drive, for exemple!). I really love nature, flowers, plants and watching what this beautiful Earth gives us makes me always peaceful and happy.

Describe your personality in 10 words!

Mh, I think I can say that I am sweet, dreamer, sensitive!, emotional, hypercritical, loyal, passionate, caring, nostalgic and spiritual.

How long have you been penpalling? How did you first start? Tell us about your first penpal!

Oh, I can say that I have not been into penpalling for a long time: I know that most people start with it when they’re children, or, at least, teens, but for me it wasn’t so. I’m not saying that I’m old :p but I have started penpalling two years ago only! I will be eternally thankful to a dear friend of mine, who suggested me Interpals to improve my English and… well, at the beginning, I didn’t know what a “snail mail pen pal” was! Weird, I know :D Then, I understood that there were people in the world who still loved to write letters, and it was love at first sight! My first penpal was (and still is) Rita from Lithuania and I consider her and all my penpals as real friends – definitely, I have found my way to be, with penpalling!

Francesca 4

My best friend Greta and me!

How many penpals do you have now and where are they from?

I have almost 20 penpals, some write me often, some not, but it isn’t important. I feel that all of them understand me and I always try to understand them, their feelings, their fears, their dreams. Even if they are not near to me, I always feel their love through letters. A letter is not only a written paper, but words that come straight from the heart.

They come from Europe mainly, but I have a few ones from USA and Canada, one from Japan and one from Australia.

Francesca 5

My friends and me in Berlin, Nov, 2011.

What are your favorite topics to discuss in letters?

I usually don’t write a standard letter, so they always are about all that comes in my mind when I’m writing. For exemple, if I see a butterfly while I’m writing, I can write about it and about something related it in my letter! Obviously, I also write about my daily life, my thoughts, my relationships with people, about the things that make me happy or sad… everything! I can’t hide anything to my penpals.

Luca, Greta and me, in a restaurant in Berlin!

What are you looking for in a penpal?

Definitely, I’m looking for an honest, caring and deep person. Someone who “reads” carefully my letters and answers to what I have written before, someone who doesn’t hide anything and tells me everything she wants without feeling  judged. I hope that everyone feels “drained” when she has finished a letter for me. That would be my model of perfect penpal – and it seems that I have found people like this!

What do you like the most about penpalling?

I like everything about it, except the Postal Service when it loses a letter! Really, I love the moment when the postman comes and I run to know if there is something for me, I love watching the envelope, to cut it, to sit down and read the whole letter… Of course I love answering them, decorating the sheets (I usually do it on my own, I don’t have much cute stationery at home), sending it and obviously knowing that it reaches its destination! I can’t imagine my life without penpalling, now.

Francesca 7

Some letters that I’m going to send. I made the envelope by myself.

In what language(s) do you correspond?

I always write in English, because it is the language common between my penpals and me. I can understand also a bit of French and so I would like to have the chance to improve it again reading a whole letter in French!

Francesca 8

Some letters I got recently.

What are some of your habits in regards to letter writing?

I usually write a letter on my kitchen’s table, and I can write it anytime during the day – I simply have to feel the mood to do it! For this reason, I don’t follow an order – if I feel that I need to reply to someone immediately, I simply do it. However, generally I reply in 2-3 weeks.

My letters are medium – or, at least, I think they’re so! I usually write 2-3 A4 pages (both sides) but, even if it isn’t the longest letter of the world, you can be sure that my letter won’t be uncaring (I hope!)

A sample of my handwriting!

Has anything strange/funny ever happened to you since you’ve been penpalling?

Ahah, one time I started to write to a very funny girl from Sweden, who worked in a kind of erotic call-center… it was a bit strange to read about what she had to do as work, but the nice thing was that she was a very positive person, although very different from me. However, she didn’t write anymore after her second letter, but definitely, it still is the strangest experience I have ever had with a penpal!

Have you met any of your penpals?

Not yet. But I hope that I will be able to do it in the future, at least the ones who live in Europe! I’m sure it will be a fantastic and emotional experience!

Francesca 10

This is a pic I took last summer, there is a poppies field behind my house!

Are you currently looking for more penpals?

Not really, but if I have to say the truth, I can’t say “no” to someone who seems to be a kind of soul mate, so if someone of who is reading thinks that we can get along, please drop me a line! My e-mail is

Thank you Julie to give me this opportunity!

You’re very welcome, Francesca!

Gorgeous picture of the poppies, by the way…

My name is Julie and I'm 37.
I'm French Canadian and fell
in love with an American,
so I'm now living in Vermont
with my wife.

I write letters, I love stationery and I have a handwriting fetish. I often eat sushi, still feel like I'm 16 and only wear skirts & dresses (with colorful tights when it's cold).

I'm happier with a mind full of ideas, a mailbox full of letters from my penpals, a shop full of stationery, a house full of pens and a day full of hugs.

Read my Top 10 Quirks here.

This is me with my wife,
Denise. We met through the
League of Extraordinary
Penpals and are living
happily ever after in the
Stationery Kingdom.

Denise blogs here too and is
the one in charge of the
social media: Facebook,
Twitter and Pinterest.

She's 40 years old,
from South Dakota,
and in love with me, washi
tape & imperial rolls.
