Today I want you all to meet a sweet girl from Italy who makes the cutest drawings…
Please tell us about you!
Hello everyone! I’m Fab, a 21 years old girl from Italy. I’m a cognitive psychology student, and I’m currently attending my second year at University. Before that, I’ve also spent a year studying Foreign Languages & Cultures, focused on English and Japanese (I’m indeed a huge anglophile and I love Japanese culture a lot!).
This is a drawing of myself that I’ve made recently.
I live at home with my mother and my two sisters, but I hope to move out as soon as I finish my studies. I have a pet guinea pig called Frodo, which is my noisy (and sometimes smelly…) roommate.
On of my biggest passion is art. I love drawing, painting, decorating, and taking pictures. I love both traditional mediums and digital art. Lately I’m more into the latter, and I’m selling some of my works online. I have a direct shop where I sell cards and homemade stickers and another, where I sell prints.
About photography, my favorite subjects to portray, are urban landscapes and architecture. I especially love black and white! I shoot both in analog and digital; lately I’ve bought a lot of film and I can’t wait to use it during my summer holidays. I also collect vintage cameras; it is a fairly new passion and for now I’m stuck at three.
I also really love to travel! As soon as my boyfriend and I have the chance, we like to visit new cities and new countries. I’ve been lucky enough to visit many states in Europe, and my dream would be to travel to the US and Alaska, and of course Japan.
I have a tumblr where I post my art related things, and a blog where I post everything that concerns snail mail and my penpals :) I love to decorate envelopes and tuck little surprises in them. Since March I’ve been part of a project, called LetterMo, which consists in sending a letter a day for a month! I’ve been accepting letter requests for a while and met a lot of nice people! I wasn’t expecting it, but it was a big success.
I’m really into music too; I used to play bass guitar in a band. At the moment my favorite artists are Florence + The Machine, and Aucan. I don’t have a favorite genre, I listen to everything I find interesting. I’ve been into punk, metal… and sometimes I still enjoy to listen to them. Some of my overall favorite bands are Placebo, Slipknot, Brand New, David Bowie, and Verdena (an Italian band). The only kind of music I don’t really like, is the sterile pop that is (to me, inexplicably) being very successfull lately.
This is my furball Frodo!
Besides cameras, I also collect stamps from all over the world. I really enjoy beautiful stamps, and I’m really glad anytime one of my penpals sends me a letter with a fancy stamp :)
I watch a lot of tv shows (to name a few: Game Of Thrones, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, True Blood…) and read a lot of books, whenever I get the chance. My favorite genres are young adult, and contemporary novels. The last book I’ve read is “In The Miso Soup” by Ryu Murakami, and I’m currently re-reading “Catching Fire”, from the Hunger Games series.
Describe your personality in 10 words!
I’m not that good at describing myself, as you might have guessed, but I can try: messy, creative, open-minded, curious, honest, shy, caring, moody, friendly, and tomboy-ish (does this one count?).
How long have you been penpalling? How did you first start? Tell us about your first penpal!
I’ve been penpalling for about 10 years now. It all started when I was in middle school and I had difficulties in making friends. One day I met a girl online, on the forum of our favorite band, and she asked me if I wanted to exchange letters and posters with her, and I decided to give it a try. She was from Germany, and a couple of years older then me. At the moment she lives in Canada and I’m very proud to say that she’s one of my bestfriends! From that day in 2002, till now, we’ve never stop writing each other, and built a very strong friendship, even though just via snail mail.
This is one of the cards I’ve designed :)
How many penpals do you have now and where are they from?
At the moment I have about 12 regular penpals. They’re from all over the world: USA, Canada, Finland, Portugal, Philippines…
I really love to travel and discover new things about different countries and cultures, and one of my goals is to have at least a penpal from each country!
What are your favorite topics to discuss in letters?
Anything! I love to read about my penpals’ interests and also their daily life. Their dreams, ambitions, talents… whatever we feel to write about, it’s good :)
What are you looking for in a penpal?
Well, common interests would be good, I suppose. However I’m very open to meet people that enjoys completely different things and learn more about them through their stories and experiences.
What do you like the most about penpalling?
The excitement to see my mailbox full, and the surprise that comes with every letter, is definitely one of the best parts! As I’ve already said I love making friends, but I’m really shy in person, so another thing I love about penpalling, is that it takes away this limit of mine.
These are some of my outgoing letters from last month.
In what language(s) do you correspond?
English, but it’s OK if some of my penpals want to practice Italian with me :)
What are some of your habits in regards to letter writing?
My favorite place to spend the time is my room, more precisely my desk. I like to have all my stuff in handy when I write letters: deco tapes, pens, stickers, stationery etc. Oh, and also a warm cup of tea!
I prefer to write letters late at night, when I feel more relaxed and inspired.
I’m usually a fast replier, and by fast I mean that within a week or so your letter is stamped and ready to start its journey to you.
I really enjoy reading long letters, and also write them! Mine are almost never shorter than at least two pages.
Has anything strange/funny ever happened to you since you’ve been penpalling?
I once received an unsigned letter, and I’m still wondering who the mysterious sender might have been! But besides that, nothing (sadly… or not?)
A sample of my handwriting.
Have you met any of your penpals?
Unfortunately not! But I’m planning to meet one of them very soon, if my University commitments allow me.
Are you currently looking for more penpals?
Always! I’d like penpals preferably my age (19-23) and possibly not from the USA (only because most of my penpals are from the States), but if you think we’ve got something in common, then every request is appreciated!
You can contact me at my email address: wreckthisgirl(at)gmail.com
Thank you dear Fab! Loving all your illustrations…
