There’s a superhero party over at the League of Extraordinary Penpals! You still have time to join us if you’d like to participate (154 members and counting!), but quick, this is your last day to sign up in order to receive the very first newsletter that comes out tomorrow. We have good music (Rick Astley!) and free punch that makes you go invisible! Now if that’s not the best selling point ever, I don’t know what is.
P.S.: As you probably noticed, I didn’t have time to write on my blog as much this month because of my involvement in the LEP, but I should start posting penpal ads more regularly again very soon!
A Penpal of the Week from South Africa – yay!
Please tell us about you!
My name is Hannah Rorke. I am 21 years old. I live in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I have a brother who is older than me and I have two dogs. A miniature daschund and a Jack Russel. I will be starting University soon. I will be studying Nature Conservation.
This is me at my Prom. I went with my brother’s best friend.
It was the best time ever :)
I am a bookworm. I generally read fantasy. I am also a huge FC Barcelona fan. Lionel Messi is my future husband :) I have read all the Harry Potter books (more than once). I love to listen to music. My favourite bands include Muse, Green Day and Florence and The Machine.
I also really like to travel and last year I took a “gap year” where I went around the world (literally!). I visited England, America, Europe and Japan. I absolutely love traveling.
This is me in New York while I was on my gap year.
I am a Facebook addict so it’s generally better to contact me through there. Here is a link to my facebook page: Hannah Rorke – just let me know that you are from the pen pal place and I will accept you.
Here is my pen pal profile on Interpals so you can contact me there as well: HannahMessi10.

Describe your personality in 10 words!
I am a loyal, caring, trustworthy person who is passionate.
How long have you been penpalling? How did you first start? Tell us about your first penpal!
I have been pen palling for 3 years now. My first pen pal was a girl from Thailand. We are still good friends and we write regularly to each other. I was new to the whole snail mail business and Chanika showed me the way.
This is me in Amsterdam.
How many penpals do you have now and where are they from?
I have about 15 good pen pals. They are Leticia from Brazil, Karolina from Czech Republic, Ella from Finland, Veronika from Russia, Nika from Hungary, Tomi from England, Nicolas from Belgium and Brittany from the USA to name a few.
What are your favorite topics to discuss in letters?
I like to discuss anything really. I am a good listener so I like it when a pen pal tells me problems and I offer advice. I like to discuss Nature and Animals since my one dream is to run a conservation project that takes in orphaned animals and rehabilitates them into the wild. I also like to discuss books and movies.
I used to work as a tour guide for a Cheetah rehabilitation Project.
Don’t worry she is very tame! Cheetahs are the only wild cats that you can tame :)
What are you looking for in a penpal?
I am looking for someone who is willing to write regularly and won’t stop after a couple of letters. I would like someone who is willing to swap small gifts and post cards. Someone who likes to write long letters and decorate them. Also, someone who puts a lot of thought into their writing. Someone who is always there if I need a friend.
What do you like the most about penpalling?
You get to meet so many different people that you wouldn’t get to meet when you live in a small town. I love the fact that you get to communicate with people from all over the world and learn their languages and cultures. I just love to write so that in itself is a passion for me.
This is me eating Sushi in Japan.
In what language(s) do you correspond?
I correspond in just English because I do not know any other language but I am willing to learn.
What are some of your habits in regards to letter writing?
I usually take a while to write a letter. Sometimes I finish a letter and then toss it because I don’t like a word I used or a topic I discussed. I am very picky and put a lot of thought into my letters. I usually write them anywhere. The dinning room table, next to my computer, outside or on my bed. Sometimes it is a while before I post a letter because I rely on my parents for transport.
This is me writing a letter with my daschund sitting in my lap.
I will be going to university soon so I will probably have less time for letter writing, but I definitely won’t stop because I go into withdrawal symptoms if I do not write any letters.
I have a Marilyn Monroe letter box where all my postcards and letters are kept. It is full and I love to go through all my letters.
I usually write 2-4 page letters to my good pen pals and write 1-2 page letters to people I start with if I know that they don’t like long letters. But Leticia and I usually write 10 pages to each other. It takes forever for the post to come to and from Brazil.

Has anything strange/funny ever happened to you since you’ve been penpalling?
I have had many strange things happen. A lot of marriage requests from people in Ghana and other places in Africa. A lot of them also want me to send them money. One time a guy actually proposed to me on the first message he didn’t even write a letter to me.
One of my pen pals wrote a letter to me saying that she wants to stop writing to me. She said that I was boring even though in every other letter she wrote to me she said that she loved getting my letters. Strange.
I once had a letter from a middle aged lady who typed it out and then just signed it. That was pretty weird too.

Have you met any of your penpals?
I have met 2 of my pen pals. The first one was Brittany she lives in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. I was there visiting my family and we met up one day in Salem the witch city. It was so much fun and we got on like a house on fire. We did tarot card reading, shopping and went on a ghost walk. While I was in Boston she also took me with her boyfriend to Water Country in New Hampshire which is a water theme park. IT WAS AWESOME. I had a really great time. For our last meeting we went shopping in Boston and then went on a whale watch and saw a movie. It was fantastic meeting her and we are still good friends.
On the left is me (the short one) and on the right is my st pen pal that I met Brittany.
The second pen pal I met was Ella who lived in Helsinki, Finland. This also went so well. I stayed with her for 5 days. On the first day we went and saw Snow White and the Huntsman together quite late at night. It was really fun. Then for the rest of the time she showed me Helsinki and we watched all the Harry Potter movies. It was great because we were so comfortable with each other.
Are you currently looking for more penpals?
Yes I am always looking for more pen pals. I love writing letters and will continue to do so until I am old and grey and maybe even after that. Ha ha
Thank you, Hannah!
Letters from the afterlife, anyone?!
