Penpal of the Week #134

This week I was happy to interview someone who lives in a country I visited and loved very much…

Please tell us about you!

Hi there, I’m Melissa, a twenty-something woman living in tiny little Belgium.

Melissa 1

Me :)

I’m living home with my dad, our house plants, the dogs and the cat. I love writing, reading old books and magazines, freshly cut flowers, guitar strings and the button of my camera. I pretend to be a crafter, sewing woman, photographer and journalist.

I’m studying journalism¬† (selfstudy) and educator for youth with problems. Someday I wanna change the world.

Melissa 2

My favorite dog in the world.

I’m a social media woman. I blog on The mind of an exchange, I’m using Twitter // Facebook // Instagram // Pinterest

Describe your personality in 10 words!

Dreamer, smiler, open minded, lazy, stubborn (I got to be honest), sensitive, honest, stayer, social, uncertain.

How long have you been penpalling? How did you first start? Tell us about your first penpal!

I had my first penpal when I was in high school. One of my classmates moved out of Belgium and we wanted to stay in touch so we decided to become penpals. We kinda stopped writing after a while. But by then I already found a new project to write with fellow Afs’ers and friends.

Owl drawing…

How many penpals do you have now and where are they from?

I have 5 active penpals who always write back as soon as they get the letter, and I guess 5 more inactive ones. For now I’m pretty inactive because I’m very busy with life but I’m trying to get back to everyone asap.

All of my penpals are different. They live in different countries and have different life styles. That’s what I like the most about them. I should really find some penpals in Belgium now :)

Melissa 4

A letter I sent with a little present and a card…

What are your favorite topics to discuss in letters?

Mostly we talk about our lives, the things we did or planning to do. I have one penpal where we discuss politics and media things. I love those things too. Every subject is fine to me. I love reading letters. So I guess every topic is fine. I love sharing interests like books, music…

What are you looking for in a penpal?

A penpal needs to be open minded to me. I had a hard life and met a lot of people who are different than the “average” people. That’s the only thing that’s very important to me.

Melissa 5

This is me and my sister.

What do you like the most about penpalling?

Just opening the mailbox and finding a cute letter. I love reading things on paper and I love the way I feel when I got to open the letter. I also love the traveling of the letter. I have a penpal in Australia and just thinking about the trip the letter made is really cool. Snailmailing is way cooler than e-mailing. :)

In what language(s) do you correspond?

Most of the letters I write are in English, like I said earlier I should find some dutch penpals.

I once wrote a letter in Danish too :) (don’t really know if she understood everything)

Melissa 6

My terrible handwriting.

What are some of your habits in regards to letter writing?

I mostly take a lot of time to decorate my letters and write them. I try to send a letter back in the same month as I got the letter, and mostly my letters are two sides of paper long.

Has anything strange/funny ever happened to you since you’ve been penpalling?

I got a request from a girl who used a fake account on Facebook. I really didn’t get how I should write with a fake girl using pictures from a Swedish singer. I guess I never wanted to figure that out. I also got a melted chocolate in one of my envelopes :) love the idea but not really clever I guess.

Melissa 7

Old writer machine I use for letters and more…

Have you met any of your penpals?

I never met any of my new penpals, got to meet up someday.

Are you currently looking for more penpals?

Only if they are Belgians (too much international already). I’m in for swaps to everyone, so if it’s only a one time penpal thing like a postcard you can always contact me.

Thank you Melissa!

My name is Julie and I'm 37.
I'm French Canadian and fell
in love with an American,
so I'm now living in Vermont
with my wife.

I write letters, I love stationery and I have a handwriting fetish. I often eat sushi, still feel like I'm 16 and only wear skirts & dresses (with colorful tights when it's cold).

I'm happier with a mind full of ideas, a mailbox full of letters from my penpals, a shop full of stationery, a house full of pens and a day full of hugs.
