Today’s Quirky Penpal Ad is a bit of a mystery. It’s super ironic to me that on the front of Kay’s notecard, she writes “WHoooooooooo ARE YOU?”, because if I could get a hold of Kay, I would like to ask her this exact question, who are you?
Unfortunately, there is no return address and no email address included in this ad. So… I’m hoping that Kay is reading this and can leave us a comment with a way that we can get in touch.
Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and we will be taking a few days off of the blog to relax and celebrate together. We fully intend to be spending part of our holidays writing letters, how about you?
If you find yourself having some relaxing down time, I want to encourage you to take the time to create a Quirky Penpal Ad and send it in the mail to us. Just remember to include your email and/or snail mail address. ;)
We are looking forward to being back with you next week. Julie and I want to wish you a Merry Christmas!
Christmas is in 3 days! Who’s excited?! Who’s stressed!? Who’s both!?? I’ve really enjoyed a quiet and stress-free Advent and Christmas season. Last night, we lit the Love candle in our Advent wreath and we talked about what Love meant to us as we ate dinner.
Saleana, she is our Penpal of the (Christmas) Week. I hope you will enjoy her interview.
Please tell us about you!
I usually hate talking about myself, but that’s what I’m here for right? I’m Saleana, 22 from Connecticut, USA. I work at a dry cleaners right now. I live with my fiancee Meghan and our fishy, Poseidon. My email is email@example.com.
Those were some boring sentences. For the “fun” stuff: I’m currently obsessed with the Beauty and the Beast. I’ve been watching it on repeat. I’m Pagan and it’s a pretty big deal for me. I just started a blog with my coven sister “The Samhain Sisters” and we just started a business. Wowza! My Tumblr has a lot of witchy posts if you want to check that out.
Me meeting one of my favorite authors: Jeri Smith-Ready a few years ago.
Besides the shameless promo I like to read, write book reviews, write letters and play around with Tarot, Ogham and other forms of divination. I don’t have cable at home so I’m not up to date with t.v., but like I said, Beauty and the Beast man, good stuff. ;)
Describe your personality in 10 words!
Wacky. Animated. Honest (supplied by my little sister… take that for what you will). Ambitious. Stubborn. Witty. Eclectic. Artistic. Creative. Sheepy. The last one is my nickname from the wifey. My middle name and last name both translate into “sheep.” My first name is after the moon goddess and she thought it was hilarious that my name is literally “Moon Goddess Sheep Sheep” I’m like the moon moon wolf in that one meme. So it was shortened to sheepsheep and then to sheepy. Makes me all warm and fuzzy.
Meghan, my fiancee/wife.
How long have you been penpalling? How did you first start? Tell us about your first penpal!
Ever since I was 12, so about 10 years. My first penpal… well to start I have over a hundred! Lemme explain. There was this lovely group back then that was run through the German Postal System and you placed ads in their magazine. Well, I did and I got over a hundred letters from all over the world and I answered everyone back! Most folks didn’t last long, sadly, but one, Mary from Germany, did and I’m still writing to her today!
How many penpals do you have now and where are they from?
I have about 15 or so, some folks write constantly which is great, and others are more casual, which is also cool. I just met two more lovely ladies, but they’re email only. I love chatting with all sorts of folks about almost anything!
Probably the best photo I’ve taken ever. I’m so proud of it.
I like to think of myself as a photographer.
What are your favorite topics to discuss in letters?
Hm, anything really. I like swappy type letters. Recipes, spells (with my Pagan frands), photos etc. Postcards are awesome too. Discussion wise, I like anything that they want to talk about. I have a few that are deep and emotional, and others are just shooting the breeze.
What are you looking for in a penpal?
I’m looking for someone who will write back, or at least let me know if they think it’s not working out. Break up with me in a dignified way instead of just disappearing. Someone who can deal with my anxiety filled letters. Sometimes I use letters as a crutch for my panic attacks, but if you don’t like that, lemme know.
A sample of what I normally write on, as you can see I like a darker aesthetic.
Does that Poe look familiar? ;) Never discontinue this. I’d cry. Forever.
What do you like the most about penpalling?
Connecting with people. Having friends I don’t actually have to see lol (anxiety talking there). Getting to see the daily lives of folks. I ADORE getting “stupid” little things from people. One penpal sent me a receipt from her store and I lost my mind. So cool to see stuff like that.
In what language(s) do you correspond?
English and very bad French. If you want to learn English and can help me brush up on my French that would be great. ;)
That’s my penmanship.
What are some of your habits in regards to letter writing?
Hm, it depends. Some days I reply in a few days, once I took a week because I suck lol. Most of the time I get the letters busted out within a few days. If I’m particularly crazy I get them out next day. Most letters are at least two pages front and back. I very, very rarely will only do a page. I feel like that’s silly given how much postage is. I try to smoosh lots of washi tape all over everything, so beware.
Has anything strange/funny ever happened to you since you’ve been penpalling?
I was proposed to once! I wrote to this kid from Africa and he sent me a flower and proposed. It was nice, if unwanted.
Have you met any of your penpals?
I just met one today actually (December 3rd) we met for Japanese food and totally forgot to take photos!
This is what I ate when I met up with my penpal RayRay –
of course I forgot to get a photo with her!
Are you currently looking for more penpals?
I am! Email me if you’re interested! :)
I’m listening to my favorite Christmas album as I type this and it makes me wonder if you like to listen to music when you write letters. Head on over to our Facebook and tell us about your favorite letter writing music!
