Penpal of the Week #180

I’m excited to be posting Andrea’s interview for you today. As you read a bit further down the page, you’ll notice a really cute platypus… said platypus was actually sent in the mail to me a couple of years ago!

Thanks for sharing about your penpal hobby with us, Andrea…

Please tell us about you!

I am Andrea, a 43 year old full time mom of a kindergartner and the wife of a big kid. We only have one child – it took us 10 long years to get him. I live just outside of San Francisco, CA, on the coastline. If I go much farther west, I am going to get wet!

I work as a massage therapist on a part-time basis. I’ve been doing massage professionally since I was a mere baby – of 22 years old. I have massaged some celebrities, including Spike Lee and Darius Rucker.

I crochet amigurumi. I stopped biting my nails two years ago and am now obsessed with cute nail stuff. I am learning to wear make-up. At some point in life, you just start to need it. I am at that point.

I don’t do well with e-mail pen pals, but here’s my e-mail address if you want to contact me for more details.

How do you like my lips? I had to see if the wax lips my son got at

Halloween were still as disgusting as I remembered them to be.

The answer is: YES!

Describe your personality in 10 words!

Introvert who likes to sit in the background and watch.

How long have you been penpalling? How did you first start? Tell us about your first penpal!

I have been pen palling since I was 8 years old. My mom’s childhood pen pal has a daughter my age. We started writing to each other and haven’t stopped! My mom and her mom still write to one another as well. We have all met in person (they are in England) a few times. Such a neat thing.

One of my crafty creations that every pen pal needs! A bunny pen!!

How many penpals do you have now and where are they from?

Currently, I may have about 12 pen pals who I hear from on a regular basis. They are pretty much from the USA only. They are all very easy to write to because it feels like we’re sitting together, sharing a beverage and chatting away! They are some of my best friends.

This is my house. :) The colorful thing on the lawn is an inflatable

sock monkey with a candy cane. It was Christmas when Google came by

with their camera. The mailbox is on the left side of the garage.

What are your favorite topics to discuss in letters?

Mostly, I write about just regular day to day things. I never set out with specific stuff to write about. I just put the pen to paper and see where it leads. I write the way I speak – very casual.

What are you looking for in a penpal?

I am looking for pen pals who are near my age and in the USA. I know there are some lovely people in other countries, but postage is a killer as a full time mom. I hope to find pen pals who write about their days, their families, and of course, respond to what I wrote to them.

I hold the pen incorrectly. I also hold a crochet hook incorrectly.

But it works for me and I get the same result.

What do you like the most about penpalling?

I LOVE getting fun mail. Does anyone ever admit they like bills? :) My friends come to my mailbox – I’ve made some of the most amazing friends through pen palling.

In what language(s) do you correspond?

It’s English only for me.

This is pretty typical – me sitting on the floor and the kid sitting on me.

What are some of your habits in regards to letter writing?

I like to hand-write my letters because I can do it anywhere. I pretty much always have some sort of paper and a pen with me. Many letters are written (partially, anyway) while sitting in the car waiting for my son to get out of school. I am not creative enough to do mail art, but I do appreciate the creativity of others. But, really, all I need is the letter. I don’t have a specific length of letter, it has to do a lot more with quality. I want to read about you and feel as though we’ve met or are actual friends. I don’t do form letters and don’t love them. :)

I try to write back quickly – within a week or so – but there are times when life gets in the way and things get busy and it takes me a little longer. I also know that my pen pals have things going on as well that keep them from being able to write quickly.

I am crafty and I am always crocheting something.

Amigurumi is my thing though. I really like platypus. Platypuses? Platypi?

Has anything strange/funny ever happened to you since you’ve been penpalling?

I had a marriage proposal in the mail. I was pen pals with this man who was stationed on a ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean. I was about 18 and his letters were getting progressively romantic. At one point, he sent me roses and a letter included with that that had a marriage proposal. I didn’t accept and that friendship fizzled out.

My handwriting.

Have you met any of your penpals?

I have met several of my pen pals. One of them was even a bridesmaid in my wedding – and we’d only met in person, twice, before that. But we became such wonderful friends several years before that. She and I are still friends and pen pals when we get the chance to write to one another.

Home! San Francisco Bay Area. This happened to be my aunt’s cruise passing under

the Golden Gate and headed to Alaska last June.

Are you currently looking for more penpals?

I would happily accept a few more pen pals who are near my age and in the USA. Here’s my email address:

Thanks Andrea!

Julie and I finished watching Making a Murderer last night. (Oy, I’m not at the place where I can even put together my thoughts on this quite yet…) We can’t decide what series to start next, so I think we’re opting for a movie tonight. I plan to have a snack that involves blue cheese. I also plan to give my wife a foot massage.

But before I go, I want to know… how many of you have watched Making a Murderer… and what are your thoughts?

Melinda in the USA

Hello to all of you fabulous letter writing enthusiasts! I just finished watching Texas A&M get beat by Vanderbilt and Wisconsin take down Ohio State. And currently on all the screens I’m surrounded by is the Bruins vs the Sabres, the Knicks vs the Pistons and UConn vs Memphis. I’m particularly looking forward to the LA/NOLA game coming up soon.

I’m drinking my second Fiddlehead and the love of my life is across the booth from me designing new stationery for the La Papierre SSS. This is one of those perfectly magical types of evenings.

I was trying to think of something I could do to make this evening just a little better… I’m thinking that sharing this Quirky Penpal Ad from Melinda would make a great addition.

I hope you’ll drop Melinda a line if you’re interested in becoming penpals with her. She sent in her ad back in October, so by now she’s experienced the new Star Wars movie… this would make for a great letter topic! Here’s her email address:

Check out the details if you’d like for me to spend an evening drinking beer, watching sports and posting your very own Quirky Penpal Ad!

My name is Julie and I'm 37.
I'm French Canadian and fell
in love with an American,
so I'm now living in Vermont
with my wife.

I write letters, I love stationery and I have a handwriting fetish. I often eat sushi, still feel like I'm 16 and only wear skirts & dresses (with colorful tights when it's cold).

I'm happier with a mind full of ideas, a mailbox full of letters from my penpals, a shop full of stationery, a house full of pens and a day full of hugs.

This is me with my wife,
Denise. We met through the
League of Extraordinary
Penpals and are living
happily ever after in the
Stationery Kingdom.

Denise blogs here too and is
the one in charge of the
social media: Facebook,
Twitter and Pinterest.

She's 40 years old,
from South Dakota,
and in love with me, washi
tape & imperial rolls.
