Help me stay in the United States!

I’ve been rather quiet online lately, because I didn’t know if I could stay in Vermont or if I’d have to go back (temporarily or permanently) to Québec. As much as I love Canada, my life is so much better here! My wife is happier in an American environment, and I’ve already made many friends in this area.

Denise and I met with an immigration lawyer earlier this month to see what our next step had to be in order for me to get my green card and be allowed to become an official American resident, and we have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that I can stay in the US if I start my immigration process now.

The bad news is that we need to find $6,000 now.

That feels both relieving and overwhelming at the same time. Unfortunately, we don’t have an extra $6,000 lying in our underwear drawer at the moment (but that sounds like a most needed addition to my long-term life goal list).

Some of our friends have mentioned that we should consider asking for donations. Some sort of “Keep Julie in the US” fund. I was hesitant because I don’t like feeling like I’m begging, but there’s something else that I wouldn’t like even more – to be separated from my wife.

So here I am folks, asking for money! Please only donate if you can afford to, and feel inclined to. If you know us, even just a little bit, you’ll know how much it will mean to us to be able to stay together during this process. If you don’t know us much, then you can read this post about how we met and this one about our wedding.

If you have a soft spot in your heart for same-sex couples or international relationships… Consider helping us out! Every dollar we receive will go to my immigration fund (medical exam, green card application, and lawyer fees). We’ll keep everyone updated on our progress right here on the blog.

$3,045 of $6,000 goal

You can send your donation through PayPal to Denise’s account below (we need to keep this separate from our business income). No amount is too low, and every donation will help. Thank you for your generosity, support, friendship and good vibes during this time!

Joanne in London

To everything (Turn! Turn! Turn!) there is a season (Turn! Turn! Turn!)… I have The Byrds stuck in my head!

There’s definitely a season for everything and currently mine involves a lack of inspiration to write. My poor penpals are not getting replies very quickly. Meanwhile, my wife is a writing machine! She’s cranking out letters and getting them sent off… I think she’s nearly caught up with her reply pile!

I need to go muster up some new inspiration to get back in the groove of writing… but before I do, I want to share this Quirky Penpal Ad with you.

If you’re feeling inspired to write to Joanne, you can send her an email.

What are some tips you can offer for those of us who are in a writing slump? New stationery? Different writing atmosphere?

I’m thinking I will go pick a random member from the League of Extraordinary Penpals database and write a postcard and send it off. Maybe it will be the little nudge I need to give myself a jumpstart back into writing letters again!

My name is Julie and I'm 37.
I'm French Canadian and fell
in love with an American,
so I'm now living in Vermont
with my wife.

I write letters, I love stationery and I have a handwriting fetish. I often eat sushi, still feel like I'm 16 and only wear skirts & dresses (with colorful tights when it's cold).

I'm happier with a mind full of ideas, a mailbox full of letters from my penpals, a shop full of stationery, a house full of pens and a day full of hugs.

Read my Top 10 Quirks here.

This is me with my wife,
Denise. We met through the
League of Extraordinary
Penpals and are living
happily ever after in the
Stationery Kingdom.

Denise blogs here too and is
the one in charge of the
social media: Facebook,
Twitter and Pinterest.

She's 40 years old,
from South Dakota,
and in love with me, washi
tape & imperial rolls.
